POUGHKEEPSIE – The Vassar College Baseball team split a Liberty League Crossover doubleheader with St. Lawrence on Monday afternoon at Prentiss Field. The Brewers took game one, 7-0, behind two extra-base hits and five runs batted in from senior Ricardo Reyna and four pitchers combined for a shutout before dropping game two, 9-4. Vassar’s record moves to 10-13 overall and 2-6 in conference play while the Saints move to 8-16 and 4-6 in Liberty League action.
Game 1 – VC 7 SLU 0
Vassar cracked the scoreboard first in the fourth inning as senior Luke Barrientos singled with one out followed by a walk by senior Marc Milano. Senior Ricardo Reyna drove both runners in on a two-RBI triple to straightaway center to make it 2-0.
The Brewers hung a crooked number on the board in the sixth following singles from junior Taison Jemison, Barrientos and Milano to load the bases. Reyna came through again to clear the bases with a double down the left field line to expand the lead to 5-0.
VC added two more runs in the sixth on a RBI single from senior Birch Herring-Jackson and a RBI double from junior Jensen Bergman.
For The Brewers
Reyna finished a big day with two hits and five runs batted in along with Barrientos adding two hits and two runs scored.
Herring-Jackson and Bergman each recorded a hit and a RBI while Jemison and Milano each registered a hit.
Sophomore Will Darrell tossed three hitless innings and struck out four along with classmate Grant Maryott earning the win after going four shutout innings and allowing two hits, two walks and struck out three.
Senior Juan Mercado and first year Kyle Donlon each added a scoreless inning of relief
For The Saints
Mike Siano, Brett Federico, John Donnellan and Daniel Verrastro each recorded a hit for St. Lawrence.
Timothy Conner took the loss as he went four innings, allowing three hits, two runs, three walks and struck out two.
Game 2 – SLU 9 VC 4
The Saints struck first in the top of the first as Eddie Morrissey drove in Siano with a RBI single through the right side.
VC drew even in the second inning on a RBI double from Reyna to knock in Jemison, who led off with a double down the right field line.
SLU regained the lead in the third off a John Gannon RBI single and Federico came across to score on a throwing error.
Vassar cut the lead to 3-2 in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Herring-Jackson to score Donlon.
The Saints lead increased to 6-2 in the fifth on a two-RBI triple from Conner, who later scored on a wild pitch.
Vassar trimmed the lead to 6-3 in the sixth on two-out RBI single from Herring-Jackson to score senior Michael Lee.
In the eighth, Lee blasted his first homer of the season to left center to make it 6-4.
St. Lawrence tacked on three runs in the ninth following a RBI single from Eoin Morrissey and a two-RBI double from Conner.
For The Brewers
Lee finished with two hits, including a homer, and two runs scored while Jemison recorded two hits and a run scored.
Herring-Jackson knocked in two runs along with Reyna adding a hit and a RBI.
Donlon garnered a hit and a run scored while Barrientos added a hit.
First year Zach Berner started on the mound and went two innings, allowing three hits, one run, two walks and struck out two.
Sophomore Sage Roy-Burman took the loss as he threw one inning, giving up a hit, two runs (one earned), one walk and struck out two.
Senior Jack Blau threw 2.1 scoreless innings in relief and struck out four.
For The Saints
Connor finished with two hits and four runs batted in along with Sean Desjardins adding two hits and a run scored.
Eddie Morrissey, Gannon and Eo. Morrissey all recorded a hit and a run batted in while Siano tallied two hits and two runs scored.
Ryan McCausland earned the win over three innings pitched and allowed four hits, one run and two walks.
Brendan Karadenes picked up the save as he threw 1.1 scoreless innings and struck out one.
