Crews Clean Up County Roads for Earth Day

POUGHKEEPSIE – In recognition of Earth Day, Dutchess County Public Works (DPW) Highway Division have been across the county picking up trash and debris as part of their ongoing efforts to maintain the County’s roadway system. So far, DPW Highway crews have picked up over 500 40-gallon bags of trash along some of the County’s most highly trafficked roadways.

Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino said, “Our DPW crews work tirelessly, no matter the season, to maintain hundreds of miles of our Dutchess County highway system. We encourage residents to help by making sure to dispose of trash from vehicles properly, or even joining a volunteer Adopt-A-Highway group. We are proud to continue this annual Earth Day clean-up tradition, and for their work all year long, keeping our roadways clean and beautiful.”

The Earth Day cleanup is held annually as a special effort to pick up trash that accumulates over the winter season and is in addition to DPW Highway’s normal road maintenance and cleaning efforts throughout the year.

Residents can also contact their local municipality for additional information on trash pick-up or other clean-up opportunities. Organizations and residents who are interested in helping keep Dutchess County’s roadways clean and scenic can participate in the County’s Adopt-A-Highway program. Organizations are encouraged to apply by calling (845) 486-2925. The New York State Department of Transportation and several local municipalities also offer Adopt-A-Road programs for state and local roadways.
