Sonya Grant Running for Newburgh City Council

NEWBURGH – Sonya D. Grant, a seasoned community advocate and 22-year Newburgh resident, officially announces her candidacy for Newburgh City Council, Ward 1. Known for her tireless work in youth empowerment, small business support, and community development, Grant brings a lifetime of leadership experience to the race.

“Our community deserves a leader who listens, takes action and delivers results,” said Grant. “I’m running to foster inclusive growth, economic development and policies that uplift all residents to ensure every resident’s voice is heard and valued.”

A 33-year life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® (AKA), a global organization committed to community uplift through impactful service initiatives, Grant has been recognized and awarded accolades throughout Orange County for her stewardship.

Additionally, she chairs a business inclusivity and equity committee to promote outreach and engagement.

An alumna of Syracuse University, Grant has professional background in corporate accounting and office management, bringing strategic expertise in branding that strengthens her vision for Ward 1.

Campaign Priorities
Grant’s campaign will focus on:
• Economic Revitalization – Support small businesses, attract livable-wage jobs, and drive essential investment.
• Safer Neighborhoods – Strengthen community policing and invest in youth programs.
• Infrastructure Improvements – Repair potholes, restore sidewalks, and address deteriorating infrastructure.
• Affordable Housing Advocacy – Address the soaring cost of living and expand access to affordable housing.
• Community Engagement – Ensure accessible and transparent leadership through regular town halls and resident input.
