BEACON – On Saturday, July 25 at the Beacon- Newburgh Waterfronts, the 22nd Annual River Swim took place.
Attracting 228 registered swimmers, the popular mile long event tallied 187 swimmers. Surpassing its $50,000 goal, the Swim tallied $66, 373, not counting event day donations.
Those critical monies will be used to support the river Pool at Beacon, along with other essentials relating to the upkeep and preservation of the Hudson River, pearls forever close to Pete and Toshi Seeger’s hearts. The folk singer activist legend passionately believed, “The world will be solved by millions of small things.”
Marie Cole, who participated in her 21st Swim (only missing 2013 due to cancer and having a team swim as her proxy), was all smiles as she exited the Hudson River and made her way to land on the Beacon side.
“My support of the River pool and participation in the annual Newburgh to Beacon Hudson River Swim is inspired by my love of the Hudson River and memory of Pete Seeger who believed that river stewardship begins with being on, near and in the river.”
It’s those “small things” which Seeger found rooted in something vital, as he once said and is highlighted on the River Pool Website page, “Participation- that’s what’s gonna save the human race.”
