MOUNT VERNON – The Buddy White Project and its colorful educational mascot Kletis 2 Kool recently distributed over 1,800 book bags stuffed with essential school supplies to local students in a celebration of learning, health and togetherness in Mount Vernon.
The organization – the brainchild of Henry “Buddy White” Allen – held the annual Book Bag & School Supply Giveaway at the Doles Center on August 2 in partnership with the Mount Vernon City School District and other entities.
“The energy was incredible,” said the altruistic Mr. White, who graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1984. “Seeing students walk away with the tools they need, and knowing our community came together to make it possible, is what this work is all about.”
Kletis 2 Kool, a twin-headed basketball character for the Buddy White Project, was on hand to deliver the brand-new bags and supplies to the children, whose families came from across Mount Vernon, so they can be prepared for the new school year.
The kids enjoyed delicious food, exciting activities and the warm encouragement of volunteers who reminded them that “sports are great, but education is the key.”
Parents connected with valuable health and wellness resources, thanks to the participation of the City of Mount Vernon, the School District, Recreation Department, Youth Bureau and Youth Shelter, as well as the Westchester Community Health Center and Colgate.
In addition to fun and games, the event also included dental screenings and health check-ins. The festive day carried a message of hope, encouragement and the importance of being prepared — both academically and personally — for a successful academic year, which kicks off September 3.
The Buddy White Project is designed to provide positive reinforcement for at-risk students in low-income areas starting at the third-grade level. It held its first back-to-school giveaway in Mount Vernon in August 2023.
After the recent event, the organization said it “extends a heartfelt thank-you to every partner, volunteer, and supporter who made this event possible. Together, we are proving that when a community unites for its youth, the future shines brighter.”
