Vassar Edged at Montclair State 1-0

MONTCLAIR, NJ – The Vassar College Men’s Soccer team saw #19 Montclair State convert a penalty kick late in the second half for the only scoring in a tough 1-0 road defeat Saturday night. Junior goalkeeper Jacob Raphan finished the night with four saves for the Brewers.

Saturday’s loss drops Vassar to 3-2-1 overall on the season with Montclair State remaining unbeaten at 5-0-2.

The Brewers and Red Hawks played a scoreless first half that featured 10 shots.

Montclair State went into the break with a 6-4 advantage in attempts.

First half corner kicks went to the Brewers by a 4-0 count.

Each team put a pair of shots on frame before halftime with Raphan and Montclair State netminder, Diesel Fiore, each turning aside both attempts.

Vassar and Montclair remained scoreless well into the second half before the Red Hawks were awarded a penalty kick in the 87th minute.

With the game deadlocked, Sebastian Lapczynski converted from the penalty spot at 86:15 for the only scoring of the game.

Vassar managed a single shot in an attempt to tie the game late in the period, a blocked shot off the foot of Arden Tobolski with 51 seconds left in the contest.

The Red Hawks doubled up the Brewers in second half shots, 8-4.

Montclair State held a 9-3 edge in second half corner kicks.
Raphan finished the second stanza with two more stops for the Brewers.

Raphan matched his season-high with four saves in the game and stands with 14 stops on the season.

Diego Pastor-Valverde led Vassar with three shots in the game, putting one attempt on target.

Tobolski recorded two shots for Vassar.

Eli Torrey finished with a shot on goal for the Brewers.

For The Red Hawks
Lapczynski scored the game winner, his first goal of the season.

Jake Winchock led all players with five shots, including two on goal.

Kevin Contreras posted three shots, putting one on frame.

Fiore earned the win in goal with a pair of saves.
