POUGHKEEPSIE – Junior Gianna Panarelli scored with just over two minutes left in the second half, sending the # RV Vassar College Women’s Soccer team to a 1-0 home Liberty League victory over visiting Ithaca Saturday afternoon.
The Brewers have opened conference play with two straight victories and now stand at 8-2 overall on the season and 2-0 in league action. Ithaca, who is now winless in its last four games against Vassar, stands at 3-3-2 overall and 0-1-0 in league play.
Vassar controlled play in a scoreless first half, outshooting Ithaca 12-2 prior to halftime.
Ithaca goalkeeper, Katrina Varnum, kept the Brewers off the board in the opening stanza with four saves.
Varnum’s best save came in the 35th minute when she made a sprawling stop off an Ava Holman attempt.
The two teams remained scoreless through the majority of the second half, until Panarelli struck in the 88th minute.
Panarelli broke through the Ithaca backline and unleashed a shot from the top of the box that snuck through Varnum and inside the left post for the only scoring of the game.
Varnum kept Ithaca in the contest with six more saves after halftime, including three in a span of just under two minutes ahead of the Panarelli goal.
Vassar netminder, Laura Shea, preserved the shutout with a single second half save.
The Brewers outshot Ithaca 10-3 in the second half and held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
