Community Fridge Opens at the Howland Library

BEACON – Howland Public Library and Fareground are pleased to announce the opening of a new Community Fridge located inside the library, expanding access to free, healthy food and strengthening local food access efforts. The fridge is available to the public seven days a week during regular library hours. The community was invited to a ribbon cutting that was held at the library on Thursday, January 15th.

The Community Fridge is a free, welcoming resource where anyone may take what they need or contribute what they can. Our neighbors are invited to donate fresh, healthy foods, especially produce and other nourishing items.

Acceptable donations include fresh fruits and vegetables, bread and baked goods, fruit or vegetable juices, pasteurized dairy products and dairy alternatives, deli items, and packaged or prepared meals from grocery stores, restaurants, or certified kitchens.

Community members are asked to review the library’s Acceptable Items list before donating and to see library staff for labeling assistance.

The new refrigerator, generously sponsored by the Friends of the Howland Public Library, features a glass door that makes it easy for visitors to see what is available at a glance and helps library outreach staff and Fareground volunteers care for the contents and keep the fridge safe, organized, and accessible.

All community members are encouraged to use the fridge without hesitation.

“Libraries are about community; we’re just taking another step toward supporting our neighbors in meaningful ways,” said Gillian Murphy, Howland Public Library Director. “Everyone deserves access to food, and we’re proud to help make that possible.”
“We are so grateful to Howland Public Library and the Friends of Howland Public Library for their commitment to food access in Beacon. Libraries are vital resources and community gathering spaces. Adding a community fridge makes our local library even more welcoming,” said Jamie Levato, Executive Director of Fareground. “Our Fridge/Pantry Care team is still seeking host sites for additional Beacon Community Fridges. Please reach out if you would like to host a fridge or pantry or if you would like to join the care team.”

“We are excited to partner with Fareground to offer this meaningful service,” said Michelle Rivas, Head of Adult and Outreach Services at the library. “As a central gathering place in our community, the library feels like a natural home for a Community Fridge. The partnership reflects our commitment to supporting the well-being of our neighbors and creating a space where everyone feels cared for and included.”
