SUNY Colts Softball Take Two in Doubleheader

MIDDLETOWN – The SUNY Orange softball team dominated County College of Morris on Tuesday afternoon, with final scores being 19-1 and 16-1 in favor of the Colts.

Game One – SUNY Orange (19) – Morris (1)

The Titans struck first putting the first run of the game on the board in the first inning. The Colts quickly responded and took control of the game, bringing in four runs in the first thanks to RBIs from Taylor Horaz, Chasity Mendoza, and Nyla Sepulveda, Audrey Reeves brought in a run after stealing home.

The Colts continued their dominant performance, exploding for 10 runs in the second inning. Caitlyn Higby started the rally after an RBI, bringing in Hannah Moulton, Chastity Mendoza followed with an RBI Single to center field. Bridget O’Leary added another RBI single to center. Alissandra Soto drew a bases loaded walk to bring in one run. Reeves contributed a two run single to left field. Horaz brought in two runs after a single to center field. Higby drove in another two runs on a double to center field, bringing the score to 14-1 at the bottom of the second inning.

In the third inning SUNY Orange added five more runs. Sepulveda was hit by a pitch with bases loaded to bring in a run, followed by walks by Soto and Moulton that both brought in runs. Horza added another RBI with a single to right field, and Higby added another RBI single to left, closing out the inning with a 19-1 lead.

The Colts locked down the Titans to secure the win by the fifth inning. Freshman pitcher Horaz delivered a strong performance in the circle, facing 19 batters while allowing just one earned run and striking out six. At the plate, Horaz went a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBIs. Higby also had a standout game offensively, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs of her own.

Game Two – SUNY Orange (16) – Morris (1)
SUNY Orange kept their momentum in the second game quickly setting the tone in the first inning scoring 12 runs. Soto brought in the first run after scoring on a wild pitch. Higby added two more runs with a single to center field. Sepulveda, Horaz, and Alexandra Cushing each contributed RBI singles. Moulton added a three run double to left field. Mendoza, Soto, and Reeves each drew walks to bring runs in.

Both teams were held to a scoreless second inning, but that would go on to change in the third inning. As the Titans would go to bring in one run that inning off a double to center field. The Colts added three more runs of their own thanks to Moulton who scored on a wild pitch. Higby added another RBI single, and Ashley Quintero was walked to bring in another run.

The Colts added one more run in the fourth thanks to an RBI from Mendoza to top off the score at 16-1.

Pitching for the Colts was freshman Bridget O’Leary facing 21 batters, allowing one earned run and stinking out four batters.

Higby ended her day going 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs. Moulton went 2-for-2 with three RBIs.

The Colts are back in action on April 12, as they play host to Monroe University-Bronx for a doubleheader. The first game is set for 12:00 pm.
