Jacobson Hosts Gun Buyback Event in Poughkeepsie

POUGHKEEPSIE – Assemblymember Jonathan Jacobson (D-104) hosted a gun buyback event in Poughkeepsie last weekend that collected a total of 119 firearms, including 19 assault weapons and 55 handguns. The event was held in partnership with the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department at Beulah Baptist Church.

“Gun buybacks are part of a broader approach to preventing gun violence,” Jacobson said. “One less gun in circulation is one less gun that can get into the wrong hands and end up hurting or killing a relative, friend or neighbor.”

This is the second gun buyback program hosted by the Assemblymember this year. The previous event in Newburgh collected 83 firearms.

Gun buybacks operate as an amnesty program, in which guns are exchanged for gift cards with no questions asked and no identification required. Once the weapons are logged by the police, they are destroyed.

“Thank you to the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department and Beulah Baptist Church for supporting this successful effort to get guns off the streets,” Jacobson said.
