Camp Kids Enjoy Annual Fishing Trip

NEWBURGH – Wherever you looked last Wednesday on the extensive Chadwick Lake grounds you could see children laughing, playing, discovering, interacting with one another, and just plain having fun.

For over two decades, TEAM Newburgh has collaborated with an assortment of community partners- amid the generously provided, gorgeous Newburgh backdrop- to take youth, in first through fifth grades, on a “Fishing Trip.” The chock-filled day is highlighted by a full presentation on fishing by members of the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), who relays critical knowledge to youth on how to fish competently and safely, then assists them as they put their newfound knowledge to on-hands tests. Carefully hooking bait onto provided fishing rods, eager children could be spotted in stations around the lake, keenly listening into priceless fishing guidance, then deftly displaying their casting skills and oftentimes reeling in their treasured prizes.

“The best part of the day is seeing the sheer joy and excitement on the children’s faces as they fish and for many, catch a fish for the very first time; it’s amazing,” said Eileen Buckley, who is a long-time volunteer with TEAM Newburgh, involved in this event since its inception. “Also, just the fact that they are able to experience things outside of fishing-with all of the stations- on this day, really gets them out of their comfort zones and allows them to grow.”

Those stations-provided as groups alternated to the fishing site-included; the National Guard from Stewart Air Force Base teaching about and allowing kids to explore their vehicles, yard games overseen by the City of Newburgh Police Department members, a playground, obstacle course and arts and crafts opportunity to color fish. A pizza lunch, provided by Joe’s Pizza on Route 52 of Newburgh and served by Catholic Charities members as well as an assortment of refreshing options from the Salvation Army ice cream cart kept campers fueled with energy to tackle each of the enticing offerings.

It’s a vision, filled with occupied youth, given positive opportunities and helpful information to make pro choices and behavior that lies at the center of the TEAM Newburgh mission. Guided by an entourage of committed community partners, several actively involved at the Fishing Trip-Fidelis and the Drug and Alcohol Awareness Council- TEAM Newburgh holds several events year round, each aimed at uplifting through empowering activities, hoping to build stronger communities. Much of that integral process begins with the youth.

“There are several joyful things about today, such as the kids coming together and engaging with one another while being in nature,” said Rebecca Atlas, TEAM Newburgh Coalition Coordinator. “They also have the opportunity to develop pro social skills, and it is great-so important having all these different agencies come together to support the youth and the community.”
