Meals on Wheels “Aces” Take A Swing at Hunger

NEWBURGH – On a perfect Monday morning, July 20, the sixth annual “Take a Swing at Hunger Golf Classic” teed off at the beautiful and historic Powelton Club, benefiting Meals on Wheels of Greater Newburgh. An ambitious fundraising goal of $25,000 was established to support the organization’s mission of providing freshly prepared home-delivered meals to some of the community’s most vulnerable residents.

A spirited field of 99 golfers on 25 teams—including local businesses, golf enthusiasts, and community members—competed in a four-person scramble. Contests for closest to the pin, longest drive, and Backswing Golf’s Beat the Pro added energy, friendly rivalry, and plenty of fun to the day.

After the tournament, golfers and guests gathered for a dinner banquet and awards ceremony featuring prize raffles, a 50-50 drawing, and a lively auction of sports tickets, golf packages, and collectibles. The celebration was filled with laughter, camaraderie, and a shared sense of accomplishment.

Tournament Director and Board Vice President Joe Dirago welcomed everyone and expressed his appreciation for a wonderful day of golf and the tournament’s largest participation to date. He honored the contributions of late Board Member, Martin Sheffield, for his many years of service and dedication. Carole McDermott, Board President spoke about Meals on Wheels’ history and mission. At the conclusion of the festivities, Dirago proudly announced that the event had raised over $30,000 for Meals on Wheels, surpassing all expectations! He acknowledged the sponsors and golfers, with special recognition for the Kaplan Family Foundation, the Powelton Club Duffers and Giordano Industrial as Platinum “Ace” Sponsors.
