Heinemann Leads Marist Men’s Tennis

WEST POINT – The Marist University men’s tennis team competed against NJIT, St. Bonaventure, and Army West Point at the Army Invite this weekend, earning several individual and doubles victories across two days of round-robin play.

Junior Gregor Heinemann led the way for the Red Foxes with four victories across singles and doubles play, while senior Thomas Bevan, freshman Matteo Mejia, and freshman Jack Lindstrom each earned three wins.

Marist opened the weekend against NJIT in doubles, where sophomore Ivaylo Simeonov and Mejia earned a 7-6 victory. Against St. Bonaventure in singles, Simeonov, Bevan, Mejia, Lindstrom, and Heinemann each picked up wins. Simeonov cruised to a 6-0, 6-4 victory, while Bevan earned a 6-4, 6-4 win. Mejia battled to a 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 victory, while Lindstrom and Heinemann each earned straight-set wins, 6-1, 6-4 and 6-1, 6-0, respectively. 20

In singles against Army West Point, sophomore Alejandro Abella Fernandez, junior Ethan Hirons, Bevan, and Heinemann all earned victories.

Abella Fernandez rallied for a 3-6, 6-1, 10-4 win, while Hirons earned a 6-2, 5-7, 10-7 victory. Bevan added a 6-2, 6-7(4), 10-3 win, and Heinemann closed out his match with a 6-3, 6-3 victory.

Day two began with Marist earning two of three doubles victories against Army. Hirons and Bevan teamed up for a 6-2 win, while Heinemann and Lindstrom earned a 6-3 victory.

Against St. Bonaventure in doubles, Abella Fernandez and junior Fateh Singh earned a 6-3 victory, while Lindstrom and Mejia cruised to a 6-0 win. Marist closed the weekend against NJIT in singles, with Heinemann and Singh each earning straight-set victories. Heinemann defeated his opponent, 6-4, 6-4, while Singh earned a 6-2, 6-4 win.

The Red Foxes travel to the Hofstra Invitational on Sept. 25-27.
