Verheul’s Two Goals Lift Red Foxes Past Canisius

BUFFALO – Junior captain forward Chris Verheul scored twice to lead the Marist University men’s soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Canisius on Saturday afternoon at Demske Sports Complex.

“Job done on the road,” head coach Matt Viggiano ‘99 said. “Always a tough trip up north and Canisius can present problems. Had some nervy moments but we saw it out. Thought Miles was very good on the day, and Chris put in a workmanlike performance. I was glad to see our captain rewarded with two goals. Big week coming up at first-place Fairfield and Senior Day vs. Merrimack.”

The Red Foxes improve to 4-2-4 overall and 2-1-1 in Metro play, while the Golden Griffins fall to 1-9-1 overall and 0-4-1 in conference play.
Sophomore forward Adriano Iannello opened the scoring in the seventh minute, finishing a pass from junior midfielder Caio Cavaletti to give the Red Foxes an early 1-0 lead.

Canisius answered in the 18th minute when Gael Arceo found the back of the net to even the match at 1-1. Verheul scored in the 60th minute on a setup by sophomore forward Ronan Hogg to put Marist back in front, 2-1.

Verheul struck again in the 83rd minute, scoring his second goal of the afternoon to secure the 3-1 victory for Marist.
