Calli McMullen Highlights Solid Penn Challenge

PHILADELPHIA, PA. – The Army West Point women’s track and field team competed at the Penn Challenge at the University of Pennsylvania on Saturday.

Among the standouts was junior Calli McMullen, who captured the Black Knights lone individual victory with a win in the 400-meter dash. McMullen was also the anchor on the victorious 4×100 meter relay team.

Head Coach Mike Smith said, “We had some really strong results in the field events today. The cool temperatures and the strong winds made things difficult on the track today, but our throws marks were outstanding again.

“Once again the throwers carried the day for us. There were some nice marks from that group in the discus and the hammer throw. It is not just the improvements that stand out to me; rather the consistency of the marks those women are achieving. Abigail Green and Emily Mikoud have jumped up into the top-five all time in both the hammer and the discus and they are only plebes. So as they hone their technique, they may throw even further. I am really impressed with how they are handling themselves.

“On the track, we competed well in winning a few events. Calli looked great in the 400 in less than ideal conditions and the 800 women did a nice job of challenging for the win.

“On the whole it was a positive day. We came here to work on a few things as we approach the main part of the season and by and large we accomplished what we came here to do.”
