NEWBURGH – Memorial Day 2025 saw communities across the nation coming together to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to the country. Originally established in 1868 as Decoration Day, the holiday has evolved into a solemn occasion for reflection, remembrance, and gratitude.
In the city of Newburgh, the community took time to pause and reflect on the sacrifices made by military personnel throughout the nation’s history.

Hundreds gathered along Broadway to witness the many community based organizations, military, fire and elected officials who marched down Broadway from West Street to Liberty Street before resting at George Washington’s Historic Site.
There a wreath-laying ceremony took place as military leaders, dignitaries, and families of fallen heroes paid their respects.
Across the country, and around the Hudson Valley, parades marched through city streets, flags flew at half-mast, and moments of silence were observed in remembrance.

Memorial Day also marks the unofficial start of summer, but for many, the day remains deeply rooted in honoring the sacrifices of the nation’s military heroes. As families gathered for barbecues or quiet reflection, the true meaning of Memorial Day was never forgotten: a time to honor, remember, and be grateful.
