Around the County This Week With Steve Neuhaus

Hey Orange County.

What a July 4th weekend we had here in our wonderful County! From dazzling fireworks over our parks and lakes to community festivals that brought out neighbors of all ages, to barbecues, boating, all-star games, and time well spent with family and friends; it truly was a Great American Weekend. I was able to visit several celebrations across the County and saw firsthand the pride, patriotism, and strong sense of community that make Orange County such a special place to call home. Thank you to all the first responders, volunteers, and municipal crews who helped to make it a safe and memorable holiday for everyone.

One of the highlights of the weekend was watching the first round of harness racing in Goshen with my boys. It’s a tradition that never gets old, and this year I even got to ride in the start car, which was a lot of fun! I also made my way over to the West Point Military Academy for their “Music Under the Stars” celebration. It was an incredible evening with historical reenactors, including a replica of George Washington’s field tent, bed, and all. Watching the cadets, mostly recent high school graduates, parade in front of the crowd reminded me of the dedication and promise of America’s future leaders. The concert and fireworks over the Hudson River were a perfect end to the day.

Throughout the weekend, I bumped into friends and neighbors at events across the County. From the Greenwood Lake fireworks, always a crowd-pleaser, to the many booths and tents at the Great American Weekend in Goshen, there was no shortage of places to celebrate and connect. Personally, and for the first time, I harvested summer honey from my own hives. I usually wait until Fall, but the bees have been busy. I even recruited my father and oldest son to help.

As the weekend came to a close, I spent some quiet time on the family farm before kicking off the new week with our monthly veteran’s breakfast. It’s always a pleasure to spend time with the men and women who served our country, and this month’s breakfast was prepared by John, a Navy Seabee veteran, and a great guy.

In other news, I’m giving a shout out to Keller Army Community Hospital at West Point. I’m grateful to the staff there for handling my military bloodwork and saving me a three-hour trip to Connecticut. While in the area, I caught up with Village of Highland Falls Mayor Jim DiSalvo over some excellent pizza at West Point Pizza and Restaurant. I also stopped by Chester’s summer concert series and heard the Black Dirt Bandits, an awesome group playing across the County this season, including at our Freedom Fest on July 18th.

I’m proud to announce that the Orange County Legislature voted unanimously 21-0 to approve the County’s purchase of the Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center. This is a huge win for our residents. We’re preserving the Center’s iconic charm while planning to take the venue to another level, with more performances, educational programming, free movies for seniors, and even a film festival. We’re committed to making it a vibrant, accessible space for all to enjoy for years to come.

We’re also continuing to protect what makes Orange County beautiful. Round 2 of our Open Space Fund is now accepting applications. We’ve committed $4 million to help towns, villages, nonprofits, and landowners conserve farmland, forests, scenic landscapes, and more. Applications are due by September 19th at 4 p.m. Matching funds can cover up to 50% of eligible costs, including land purchases, easements, and stewardship. If your community has a conservation project in mind, now’s the time to act. Details and applications can be found at https://www.orangecountygov.com/2505/Open-Space-Fund-2025.

And finally, I want to congratulate William “Bill” Kirnan, Orange County’s July Citizen of the Month. I’ve known Bill for years, and his tireless work on behalf of veterans and our community is unmatched. From leading American Legion Post 158 to helping organize Hudson Valley Honor Flights, Bill gives selflessly and never seeks the spotlight. He’s the kind of person who makes things better just by being involved, and I’m proud to recognize him for all that he does.

Hope you’re enjoying your Orange County summer. I look forward to seeing you Around the County!
