Durkin Named March On for Brain Injury Walk Honoree

FISHKILL – The Brain Injury Association of New York State (BIANYS) is proud to announce that Sheila Durkin will be named as the Honoree at the organization’s annual March On for Brain Injury Walk on September 13, 2025. Sheila will be recognized at the Hudson Valley Walk, where she will have the opportunity to say a few words on the impact of a brain injury on her life.

Sheila is a proud traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivor whose determination and resilience have shaped her remarkable journey. After being hit by a car while riding her bike at just eight years old, Sheila worked tirelessly to regain her ability to walk and talk. Her strength and perseverance, supported by the unwavering love of her parents and the many people who have stood by her, have brought her to where she is today.

“The Brain Injury Association of New York State is proud to recognize Sheila as the 2025 March On for Brain Injury Hudson Valley Honoree, celebrating her kindness, spirit, warmth, and remarkable courage,” said Eileen Reardon, executive director of BIANYS.

Sheila now lives independently in her own apartment, thanks in part to the incredible support of her team at Advocate Homecare. She continues to grow in confidence and independence, embracing life with remarkable self-esteem and courage.

“Being named the March On for Brain Injury honoree has made me feel like I’m on top of the world,” said Sheila Durkin. “BIANYS is an amazing organization that helped me feel like I am not alone. I am very honored, and am excited to take part in the walk in September.

The March On for Brain Injury Walk occurs in three locations (Hudson Valley, Long Island, Rochester) across New York State and brings together brain injury survivors, caregivers, and professionals to celebrate and honor members of the brain injury community.
