Marist Season-Opening Win Over New Haven

POUGHKEEPSIE – The Marist University football team earned a 31-14 home triumph over New Haven on Friday night at Tenney Stadium in the season opener for both teams.

Samer Layous’ 35-yard field goal capped a 10-play, 59-yard opening drive.

On Marist’s next drive, the Red Foxes faced a fourth-and-one from their own 41. Tristan Shannon burst through a hole for a 59-yard touchdown as Marist went up 10-0 with 7:11 left in the first quarter.

Sonny Mannino connected with Connor Hulstein for a 17-yard touchdown as the Red Foxes went up 17-0 with 18 seconds left in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, New Haven responded with a five-yard touchdown pass from AJ Duffy to Evan Chieca. This cut Marist’s lead to 17-7, which remained the score at halftime.

On New Haven’s opening drive of the second half, Matt Bonczek and Garrett Carter combined to stop Brian Thomas for no gain on fourth-and-goal from the Marist 1.

Tyrell Powell recovered a muffed punt at the New Haven 13 with 3:24 left in the third quarter. Three plays later, Mannino’s four-yard rushing touchdown staked Marist to a 24-7 lead.

Duffy’s 21-yard touchdown pass to Logan Schmidt brought New Haven to within 24-14 with 12:32 to go.

With Marist still leading by 10, Ethan Yuska’s 50-yard punt was downed at the New Haven 2 with 2:37 to play. The Chargers drove to the Marist 27 on the ensuing drive, but it came to an end with a sack by Kade Werner on fourth down.

Marist’s next drive ended with a punt, but Yuska delivered a 52-yarder that was muffed and recovered by Rene Barber for a touchdown to close out the scoring.

Marist plays the second of its back-to-back home games to start the season on Saturday, Sept. 6 against Bucknell.
