Mount Falls Against SUNY Brockport

NEWBURGH – The Mount Saint Mary College women’s basketball team fell in its home opener against SUNY Brockport.

Mount Saint Mary looked to rebound against SUNY Brockport in their home opener at the Kaplan Center after suffering a loss to New Paltz. The Knights got off to a rough start, turning over the ball on their first two possessions and going down 7-0 early. Brianna Guglielmo would settle the team down by drawing a foul to get to the free-throw line. The Mount did a great job attacking the basket in the opening quarter, getting into the bonus early and earning 10 free throws. They battled back, and a Keira Frias three-pointer put them up 18-17. The Knights’ leading scorer on the day, Maggie Trinkaus, was feeling it as she drained back-to-back jumpers, but they would still trail 25-22 after the first quarter.

This would prove to be a fast-paced, high-offensive game, as Keira Frias knocked down her second three of the night in the Mounts’ opening possession of the quarter. Both teams batted back and forth for the lead, with freshman Gabby Ziegenbalg providing some offensive firepower off the bench for the Knights. The Golden Eagles would still find a way to lead entering the half, 47-42.

To open up the second half, Mount Saint Mary began to struggle offensively, as their 30 turnovers on the night began to catch up to them. Brockport held them to just 2 points in the first 5 minutes as the Golden Eagles held a 60-44 lead. The Knights were outscored 24-6 this quarter, only shooting 2-16 as they trailed 71-48 with only one quarter to play.

Brianna Guglielmo, who had an efficient day scoring for the Mount, got the first 2 baskets to start the quarter, but Brockport still held a big lead. Ysella Kosic came in off the bench and instantly attacked the basket to get her first points as a Knight. All 13 members of Mount Saint Mary saw action in this game, though the Knights would fall to the Golden Eagles 94-64.
