Mount Secures First Victory of the Season

NEW YORK – The Mount Saint Mary College women’s basketball team secured its first victory of the season in its Skyline opener at Yeshiva.

Mount Saint Mary opened up Skyline Conference play as they traveled into the city to play Yeshiva University. The Knights looked to continue upon their 27-0 all-time record against the Maccabees as they also looked for their first win of the season. Maggie Trinkaus opened up the scoring for the Mount at the free throw line, followed by two three pointers from Brianna Guglielmo as part of an 11-0 run to start the game. Yeshiva was able to close the gap in the final minute, cutting the Knights’ lead to just 6, but Gabby Ziegenbalg nailed a three at the end of the quarter to give Mount Saint Mary a 20-11 lead.

Sara Cashin was able to get it going at the beginning of the second quarter, scoring 5 of the Knights’ first 7 points. Sophomore forward Maggie Trinkaus stuffed the stat sheet this evening on the defensive end with 5 steals and 3 blocks as she once again proved to be the defensive anchor for the Mount. The Knights would close out the quarter with a 34-20 lead as they headed into the half.

Mount Saint Mary dominated to begin the third quarter with an 8-0 run, not allowing the Maccabees to score any points in the first 4 minutes of play. Brianna Guglielmo would then score the next 9 points for the Knights as part of her 24-point, 10-rebound performance for her second consecutive double-double. Keira Frias got in on the action with a couple of threes of her own as she has been the best three-point shooter for the Knights to start the season at an even 40.0%.

The Mount entered the final quarter of action with a 61-30 lead after outscoring the Maccabees by 17 in the third. They put the pressure on Yeshiva, forcing 33 turnovers and scoring 30 points from those turnovers. The Knights matched their third-quarter effort with another 27 points as all active members saw playing time and put in a solid effort. Darcy DeBenedittis saw the most minutes off the bench and was able to add 6 points and 8 rebounds. Mount Saint Mary would come away with its first win of the season in an 88-45 victory over Yeshiva on the road.
