Students Honor Native American Heritage Month

MOUNT VERNON – ACE students at Mount Vernon High School celebrated Native American Heritage Month through a hands-on cultural exploration project. Students presented their projects proudly to students and staff last week.

Students learned about homes, foods, and cultural practices from different Native nations and then expressed their understanding through their artwork.

Each student created their own model homestead using clay, paint, paper mâché, sticks, and textured materials to represent traditional Native American dwellings and the surrounding land.

During the classroom showcase, students shared what they had learned, explained the features and materials used to make their model homes, and discussed the cultural traditions they explored.

This project promotes curiosity while building empathy, respect and an understanding of cultural diversity. This also allows students the opportunity to practice their presentation and communication skills.
