NEWBURGH – The Mount Saint Mary College women’s basketball team was unable to come away with a win against Manhattanville University.

Mount Saint Mary looked to get back on track in its final Skyline Conference game before heading into winter break. The Knights wouldn’t get their first points until Gabby Ziegenbalg checked in and knocked down a three as part of her big first half. Both teams struggled offensively in the first quarter, but Reese Mayer and Sara Cashin provided a two-player punch for the Mount as they trailed 13-12 at the end of the quarter.

Gabby Ziegenbalg had quite the start to the second quarter, scoring the Knights’ first 12 points and hitting three shots from beyond the arc to give them their largest lead of the game, 24-17. The Valiants quickly made their way back into the game; however, they struggled to guard Sara Cashin, who drew 9 free throws in this contest. Mount Saint Mary outscored Manhattanville in the quarter as they led 30-29 heading into the half.

Brianna Guglielmo started off the half for the Knights with a steal, followed by a three as she looked to get into a rhythm in the second half. The Mount held a 7-point lead after a Maggie Trinkaus made three, but no lead was safe in this one. Each team would trade baskets, with the Knights holding a 4-point lead heading into the fourth.

Mount Saint Mary struggled to make shots in the fourth quarter, with only one made basket in the first 6:35, allowing the Valiants to take a 56-54 lead. The Knights were able to stay in the game at the free-throw line, but they were going to need to hit some shots if they were going to come out on top. The Mount would only make 2 of their 13 attempts in the quarter, for a game-low 15.38% while Manhattanville shot a game best 8-14 in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Knights 20-11. This allowed the Valiants to come away with a 63-58 win over Mount Saint Mary as they drop their second straight conference match.
