Marist University Falls at Quinnipiac, 59-47

HAMDEN, CT. – The Marist University women’s basketball team was defeated by Quinnipiac, 59-47, on Saturday afternoon at M&T Bank Arena.

After trailing by as many as 17 points, the Red Foxes cut the deficit to three in the fourth quarter, but the Bobcats used a late run to hold on for the win. Sophomore guard Danielle Williamsen led the Red Foxes with 14 points and five rebounds.

Marist falls to 6-12 on the season and 3-5 in MAAC play, while Quinnipiac improves to 13-4 overall and 8-0 in conference action.

First Quarter
Quinnipiac scored the game’s first six points before senior captain guard Lexie Tarul knocked down a 3-pointer with 5:49 remaining in the opening frame.

The Bobcats pushed their lead to 10-3 at the 4:10 mark, prompting a Marist timeout.

Marist trailed 12-4 after one quarter.

Second Quarter
Quinnipiac held a 14-6 advantage at the media timeout with 3:48 remaining in the first half.

Back-to-back jumpers from sophomore guard Kasey Bretones cut the deficit to 17-12 at the 2:19 mark.

The Red Foxes went into halftime trailing 22-15.

Third Quarter
Quinnipiac opened the second half with a 10-0 run to extend its lead to 32-15 with 6:05 to go in the third.

Marist responded by closing the quarter on an 8-0 run, including five points from Williamsen, to cut the deficit to single digits at 36-27.

Fourth Quarter
The Red Foxes opened the final frame with back-to-back baskets to make it 36-31, forcing a Quinnipiac timeout with 8:36 remaining.

The Bobcats answered with an 8-2 run to regain a double-digit lead at 44-33.

Back-to-back and-one finishes from Williamsen and freshman forward Justine Henry brought Marist within five at 44-39 with 5:51 to play.

Williamsen later converted another basket to make it a one-possession game at 46-43 with 4:04 remaining.

Quinnipiac countered with a 9-0 run, pushing its lead to 55-43 with less than two minutes to play. The Bobcats held on to win it, 59-47.
