Mount Defeated in Skyline Semifinals

KINGS POINT – The Mount Saint Mary College women’s basketball team was defeated by Merchant Marine in the Skyline Conference Semifinals.

Mount Saint Mary College women’s basketball traveled to Kings Point to take on Merchant Marine for the third time this season, this time in the Skyline Conference Semifinals. The Knights got off to a solid start to begin the game, with Brianna Guglielmo knocking down a three-pointer. Things stayed close, as Maggie Trinkaus knocked down a three to tie the score at 11-11. Merchant Marine would go on a 10-1 run, but the Mount would rebound in the final minute of the quarter, making it 21-16 USMMA.

The Knights would continue their run with 10 unanswered points to open up the second quarter, giving them a 26-21 lead. Keira Frias was the most efficient player on the Mount this evening, scoring 11 points on 3-6 shooting from three. Both teams would go on a scoring drought for over 3 minutes, with the Knights being nearly 6 minutes. Maggie Trinkaus would score right before the end of the half as Mount Saint Mary trailed 33-30.

Merchant Marine started off the third quarter with an 8-2 run, before Brianna Guglielmo would end it with a three. The Mariners led by as much as 10 points in the quarter, but the Knights refused to go away. In the final 38 seconds of the third, Sara Cashin would hit a jumper, and Guglielmo would knock down her third three of the night, as the Mount trailed just 50-45 heading into the fourth.

Angelina Donato would hit a three of her own to cut the Knights’ deficit to just 2 points early on in the quarter. Mount Saint Mary would once again go on a scoring drought, but a timely three from Keira Frias once again kept them in the game. Trailing 59-53 with 2:21 remaining, the Knights were unable to make a field goal, allowing Merchant Marine to run out the clock and advance to the Skyline Conference Championship with a 62-54 win.
