Mount Soccer Earns First Win of the Season

NEWBURGH – The Mount Saint Mary College women’s soccer team earned its first win of the season over Rutgers-Newark.

The Scarlet Raiders came out with early pressure, earning a pair of corner kicks in the opening minute, but the Knights would strike first. In the 13th minute, Kaitlyn Shotter found Grace Morra outside the box, and Morra unleashed an absolute bomb that found the back of the net to give the Mount a 1-0 lead. Mount Saint Mary controlled possession throughout much of the first half, dictating the pace of play and keeping the Scarlet Raiders on their heels. Morra and Shotter each created multiple scoring opportunities during the opening 45 minutes, but the Knights were unable to add to their lead before halftime.

The Knights entered the second half with a 1-0 advantage, looking to build off their strong opening period. Rutgers-Newark came out with a greater sense of urgency in the final 45 minutes, but the Mount’s back line of Isabella Barone, Noelle Russo, Maureen Seipp and Hailey Diaz stood strong. The defensive unit held its line and limited the Scarlet Raiders’ opportunities, while goalkeeper Julianna Ewashko remained steady as the final line of defense. Morra and Shotter continued to create chances for the Knights’ offense in the second half, but neither team could find the back of the net again. Mount Saint Mary held on for the 1-0 victory, securing its first win of the 2026 season.
