Vassar Brewers Fall 9-0 to MIT Engineers

POUGHKEEPSIE — The No. 38 Vassar College women’s tennis team saw its winning streak snap at five to No. 14 Massachusetts Institute of Technology at home Saturday, 9-0.

Vassar had begun its impressive winning streak by taking down rival Skidmore College on April 2. The Brewers picked up additional wins over Bryn Mawr College, Smith College, Mount Holyoke College and Wellesley College in the Seven Sisters Championship, but with their first loss in April, the Brewers fall to 11-7 overall. The Engineers on the other hand improve to 12-6.

The Brewers battled through doubles, but Shayna Becker and Hanna McGuire suffered an 8-2 loss at one against Elysa Kohrs and Sonya Das, Morgan Fitzgerald and Lauren Stauffer took a hard-fought 9-7 loss at two against Dora Tzeng and Kelly Zhu, and Morgan Flournoy and Kelsey Van Noy endured an 8-6 loss at three to Krystal Lai and Wendi Kong.

The Engineers carried their momentum into singles play, but not without a fight from the Brewers. Two matches were decided in a super tiebreaker: Flournoy fell 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 at No. 5 singles to Lai, while Connie Yoo lost 6-3, 1-6, 10-6 at No. 6 singles to Rena Liu.

Becker also played an exciting match, falling in a close 7-5, 6-1 loss to Kong at No. 3 singles.
