Andrew P. Poppa

Andrew P. Poppas has been promoted to the rank of major general in the U.S. Army.

Poppas is currently serving as the deputy director for regional operations, Operations Directorate on the Joint Staff in Washington, D.C. at the Pentagon.

Previously, he served as the deputy commanding general for operations in the 101st Airborne Division from February 2013 to February 2014 in Afghanistan. Poppas has commanded from the company through the brigade level serving as the commander of 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division in Afghanistan from May 2010 to May 2011; at the battalion level as commander of 5th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division in Iraq from August 2006 to November 2007; and at the company level as the commander of an airborne infantry company in the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, and the 82nd Airborne Division’s Advanced Airborne School. 

His key staff assignments include serving as the operations officer for 2nd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR), Brigade Operations Officer 504th PIR, and the 82nd Airborne Division Operation Officer. He has also served on the Joint Staff as an operations officer for the Special Operations Division and Antiterrorism/Homeland Defense Directorate. He has served in the military for 28 years.

Poppas is the son of George Poppas of Janesville, Wis. and husband of Kelly B. Poppas of Washington, District of Columbia.

He is a 1984 graduate of Janesville Craig High School, Janesville, Wis. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 1988 from United States Military Academy, West Point, N.Y. He also has a master’s degree from Kansas State University. He is a graduate of the Defense Language Institute, the Hellenic War College in Thessaloniki, Greece, and was a 2011 National Security Fellow at Harvard University.
