Durma Attempts Marine Officer Candidate School

NEW WINDSOR – New Windsor, N.Y., native and State University of New York at Albany senior Kimberly Elaine Durma is slated to graduate from Marine Corps Officer Candidate School aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., Aug. 6, 2016.

As an enrollee in the Corps’ Platoon Leaders Course, Durma, a 3.4 grade point average student majoring in business administration, must graduate from SUNY Albany following her completion of OCS to receive her commission as a Marine second lieutenant.

A commission is a formal appointment of office from the President of the United States.

The regional PLC selection process from which Durma was deemed a competitive Marine candidate and OCS both tote 30 percent attrition rates.

The mission of OCS, according to the school’s mission statement, is to train, screen and evaluate candidates who must demonstrate a high level of leadership potential, fitness and commitment to success in order to lead Marines in dynamic, austere environments.

Approximately seven percent of the Marine officer corps is comprised of females according to a 2013 Veteran Affairs study.
