Harr’s Two Goals Give Marist Soccer 2-0 Win

OLEAN – After dropping its’ last two games, the Marist men’s soccer team got back to winning ways on Saturday as the Red Foxes topped the St. Bonaventure Bonnies by a final score of 2-0. Cameron Harr collected his second two goal game of the year to give him eight goals total, tying his career high from his freshman season.

With the win, the team improves to 5-2-1, its best non-conference record in the 11 season tenure of head coach Matt Viggiano.

Connor Flatley and Simon Lund Jorgensen each picked up an assist and 17 different Marist players played in the game.

“I think we came out with the mind set especially in the second half that we were going to dictate the tempo to the other team and put them on their heels and prove to ourselves that we were the better team” said Viggiano. “The first half we were ok, kind of finding our legs but the second half it was complete. We undoubtedly deserved the result. We put them on their heels from the whistle of the second half and didn’t let up…I think today we played a lot of guys and a lot of guys stepped up and gave us some big minutes. We’re getting a lot of contribution from a lot of different places. We’re seeing it from a lot of different people and that is what it’s going to take in the conference. We can’t rely on one guy, it has to be a total team effort. We just have to come together and continue to work hard and be sharp…I think we saw a team today that was a defensive minded team and it took us a bit to figure out how to break them down and we’re going to see that in conference so it’s good practice. I’m also proud of getting a shutout. We talk about that a lot and how if the other team doesn’t score they can’t win so it was also good to keep a clean sheet today.”

Both teams managed 13 shots total, while the Red Foxes held a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The first half saw both teams with chances to score with Harr, Michael Lorello and Flatley all getting off shots on net for the Red Foxes but none found the back of the net and at the first half the Bonnies held a 7-5 lead in shots.

The second half proved to be all Marist as the Red Foxes dominated possession and play, keeping their opponents on their back heels and in their defensive half of the field. Finally after 68 minutes had been played, Flatley found Harr with a pass from just inside the box and his shot glanced off the post and bounced in for the 1-0 lead.

Marist wasn’t done with the pressure and roughly 20 minutes later, Harr again found the back of the net off a through ball from Lund Jorgensen in close to goal off a shot that beat the keeper to the low right corner.

With the two goal lead in hand, the Red Fox defense stepped up over the final several minutes and didn’t allow a single shot by the Bonnies and the final whistle sounded with Marist victorious 2-0.

Up next, the Red Foxes return home and open MAAC play against the Quinnipiac University Bobcats on Saturday, Oct. 1st at Tenney Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 PM.
