Mount Saint Mary Splits Two Non-Conference Matches

NEWBURGH – The Mount Saint Mary College Women’s Volleyball team returned to the Kaplan Center on Saturday and split a pair of non-conference matches, getting by William Paterson 15-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-23 in four sets before seeing its six match winning streak end at the hands of the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts 20-25, 22-25, 25-17, 26-28.

Mount Saint Mary pushed a season-high winning streak to six matches in Saturday’s opener against William Paterson. After dropping the first set to the Pioneers, the Mount rebounded to record 41 kills over the final three frames to secure the win.

Senior Rachel Sabatini led the offensive attack with a career-high 23 kills, while hitting an efficient .360 for the Mount. She added 21 digs in the contest to go along with two service aces. The kills total is just two shy of the four set record at the Mount.

Classmate Angelia Ciriglian also had a strong contest for the Knights, putting away 10 kills and finishing off a double-double effort with 14 digs. She posted two aces for the Mount and was one of five players with at least a pair of aces in the contest.

Junior Megan Williams rounded out the match with eight winners and three blocks, while freshman Morgan Burke picked up five kills and three more total blocks.

Freshman Madelyn Barberan raised her career-high in digs to 24 against the Pioneers and Kristen Maddock handed out 38 assists. Jackie Survilla joined Williams with a team-high three aces in the contest.

Overall, Mount Saint Mary held a 52-47 edge in kills over William Paterson and doubled up the Pioneers in service aces, 12-6. William Paterson finished off the match with a slim 6-5 advantage in total team blocks.

The Mount saw its winning streak come to an end against the Trailblazers. The Knights dropped the first two sets, before battling back to take the third and forcing MCLA to score four of the final five points of the fourth set to secure the win.

Cirigliano finished off a strong day with 15 kills against MCLA and collected her second double-double of the day with 10 digs. Sabatini added nine more kills for the Knights and added a team-high seven aces and Survilla picked up eight winners and hit a strong .300 in the contest.

Barberan added 17 more digs for the Knights in the second match of the day and Kim Gries handed out 21 assists.

The Mount put away 43 more kills in the second match of the day and held a 5-4 advantage in total team blocks in the match.

Saturday’s split moves Mount Saint Mary to 8-13 overall on the season. The Knights will be back in action again on Wednesday when they travel to the College of Staten Island. Match time with the Dolphins is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
