Vassar Brewers Women’s Soccer Falls to William Smith, 4-0

GENEVA — The Vassar College women’s soccer team fell 4-0 to No. 1 William Smith College at Cozzens Field on Saturday.

The setback marks the first in Liberty League play for the Brewers, who made program history with five straight wins to open the conference schedule.

The Herons outshot the Brewers 30-2 overall. Goalkeeper Stephanie Tapolsky took the loss for Vassar (7-6-1, 5-1-0 Liberty) with 11 saves, while Veronica Romines earned the win for William Smith (14-0-0, 6-0-0 Liberty).

William Smith scored the game’s first goal in the 36th minute. Sarah Olick-Sutphen blasted a shot-on-goal, but Tapolsky made the stop. The rebound bounced out to Phoebe Wade, who tapped it into the empty left side of the net.

The Herons carried a 1-0 lead into the break before extending their lead in the second half. Lauren Kogelmann drilled a shot off the left post, and the rebound bounced to Manning, who sent home her ninth goal of the season. Just under five minutes later, Kara Shue carried the ball into the box and sent her shot into the back of the net for her team-leading 10th goal of the year.

William Smith concluded scoring in the 85th minute. Brie Ruane collected a short cross in the box from Manning and sent her shot into the right side of the net for the final score.
The Brewers return to Poughkeepsie for their final two home games of the regular season. Vassar hosts Ramapo College on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 3:30 p.m.
