Vassar Brewers Women Win Big Versus Siena

The Vassar Women went on a try-scoring spree, and they were in no mood to compromise. They pushed the ball wide and alternated tactics by keeping it tight as they tried to expand their game. It was just too much to handle for an improved Siena College Women’s team and Vassar ran in 14 tries to garner 70 points. The Brewers will face the University at Albany next Sunday, November 6th, at the new field located on the Siena College campus. The Conference title will be on the line although both teams will advance to the USA Rugby National Fall Championship Round of 32 the following weekend.

Vassar College Women 92 v 0 Siena College Women

Siena was quite literally starved of the ball for long periods of this game and although they made a slew of tackles it was to no avail. Time and time again Vassar punched over the gain line and was winning the contact situations. It led to a very long day for the Siena ladies.

Lauren Workman was her usual abrasive self with elbows and knees flying in all directions but all the forwards ran with purpose and placed the ball well. The worry is that given more opposition in contact will the team still be able to generate quick ball. Credit is due flanker Nathalie Freeman for she was a real live wire in this match, always in close support at the breakdown.

The possession won was moved from touchline to touchline by the backs with flyhalf Mary Margaret McElduff pulling the strings. The Vassar senior had a wonderful day with the boot as she converted 11 of 14 tries which gave her a tally of 22 points and she also scampered over for a try making her individual total 27 points. We will need to check the record books to see where she stands now.

At the half it was 47-0 and a further 7 tries made an emphatic statement. The squad will need to push itself in these coming weeks as the win or go home games come along. No missed tackles and a mantra of going forward in all contact is key to success.
