Nationally-Ranked Rhode Island Tops Red Foxes

KINGSTON, RI – The Marist men’s basketball team suffered a 107-65 loss to #23/#24 Rhode Island on Monday night at the Ryan Center in the Red Foxes’ second game in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic.

The Red Foxes scored the game’s first five points. Sophomore guard Brian Parker opened the scoring with a three-point play at the 18:45 mark, and sophomore forward Isaiah Lamb added a basket 15 seconds later. After a follow by senior center Kentrall Brooks put Marist up 7-4 at the 17:29 mark, Rhode Island answered with a 14-0 run over the next three-and-a-half minutes.

The Rams never surrendered the lead the rest of the way, and took a 59-34 halftime lead. Rhode Island shot .625 (20-for-32) from the field in the first half.

Rhode Island outscored Marist 48-31 in the second half. The Rams’ largest lead was 44 points.

Red-shirt senior guard Khallid Hart led the Red Foxes with 19 points. Hart shot 5-for-10 from the field and 9-for-10 from the free-throw line. Parker contributed 18 points on 7-for-15 shooting from the field and a 3-for-3 performance from the free-throw line. Freshman center Tobias Sjoberg grabbed a team-high five rebounds and added five points on 2-for-2 shooting from the field.

E.C. Matthews paced five Rhode Island scorers in double digits with 22 points. Hassan Martin contributed a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Marist shot 22-for-55 (.400) from the field, 4-for-22 (.182) from three-point range, and 17-for-19 (.895) from the free-throw line. Rhode Island shot 35-for-62 (.565) from the field, 12-for-21 (.571) from three-point range, and 25-for-31 (.806) from the free-throw line. The Rams held a 43-21 advantage in rebounds.

Marist will return to action on Wednesday, when the Red Foxes host America East preseason favorite Vermont in their home opener. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
