Red Foxes Win Over Monmouth at Home

POUGHKEEPSIE – The Marist women’s basketball team took another Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win as they defeated Monmouth University, 66-76, in the team’s annual Pack the House game in McCann Arena.  The win moves Marist to 13-15 overall and 10-8 in the MAAC and puts Monmouth at 12-14 and 7-10 in the MAAC.

The Red Foxes tallied four players in double digits. Sophomore Claire Oberdorf led the team with 18 total points and eight rebounds in 39 minutes of play. A double-double from Freshman Rebekah Hand earned her 17 points and 13 rebounds. Lovisa Henningsdottir and Maura Fitzpatrick both etched 16 of their own on the night.

Back to back threes from Oberdorf and Henningsdottir ignited play in the first quarter. The duo put up a combined 13 of the team’s first 19 points and together went 5-7 from three-point range in the first quarter. The two teams kept it tight only allowing the margin to stretch by four in five lead changes.

A big three from Maura Fitzpatrick gave Marist the lead heading into the second quarter (16-19).

Rebekah Hand set the tone early in the second quarter with two back-to-back threes finishing the quarter with seven points and four rebounds. Oberdorf showed up again shooting 4-4 from the free throw line in the second stanza.

The Red Foxes headed to the locker room at half leading 40-33.

Monmouth fought its way back in the third quarter putting seven different players on the board, bringing the score to a three-point game. Marist hung on to the lead through the entire quarter with the help of Rebekah Hand, who put up nine points going 4-4 from inside the arch and snagging three rebounds in the third quarter alone.

A combined effort from Monmouth Sophomore Mckinzee Barker, Senior Christina Mitchell and freshman Rosa Graham accounted for 39 of the Hawks’ 66 points.

The Red Foxes will stay home when they host MAAC rival Quinnipiac on Thursday, February 23th at McCann Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
