NP Hawks Blanked at Johns Hopkins 6-0

BALTIMORE, MD – The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team dropped a 6-0 decision at Johns Hopkins University on Sunday afternoon at Stromberg Stadium to complete its three-game road trip to begin 2017.

The Hawks move to 1-2 overall and will prepare to play a double-header against Mount Saint Mary on Saturday, March 4 starting at 12 p.m. at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill, N.Y. The Blue Jays, meanwhile, improve to 2-1.

New Paltz managed six hits against the Blue Jays, with six different players accounting for the base knocks.

Sophomore Ryan Frost, junior Anthony Pantano, junior Dwayne Page, junior Chris Moran, freshman Savino Citriniti and freshman Anthony Amoroso all tallied singles to pace the New Paltz bats.

Junior right-hander Ryan Votypka earned the starting nod and suffered the defeat, going four innings allowing four hits, three runs and three walks while striking out five. Junior righty Jeff Sarra threw 2 2/3 frames in relief, striking out three, and junior southpaw Jordan Dietch (Commack, N.Y./Commack) earned one punch-out out of the pen.

Hopkins scored once in the third, twice in the fourth, once in the fifth and twice in the seventh to complete the scoring.

In the first, the Hawks threatened to score with a runner on third and two outs but were kept off the board. Again in the fourth, New Paltz had two base runners with two outs, but Hopkins was able to shut the door.

The biggest scoring threat for the Hawks occurred in the fifth when New Paltz loaded the bases with one out, thanks to singles by Citriniti and Frost and a hit-by-pitch from Amoroso. But the Blue Jays managed to get the next two outs without any damage.

In the sixth, two more runners reached base with two outs and yet again, the Blue Jays would not allow a run to score. New Paltz managed a few more runners on base in the last three frames but could not break through.
