Brewers Baseball Split With Bard College

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON – The Vassar College baseball team erupted with nine runs in the fourth inning of game one of its doubleheader Sunday afternoon with the Bard College Raptors, winning  a 2:23 contest in seven innings 15-2 before falling 3-4 splitting the Liberty League contest inside Honey Field.

It was a big day for the Vassar infield as first baseman Evan Traush, second baseman Bobby Kinne and third baseman Matt Martino drove the Brewers offensively with three runs apiece in the epic two hour and 23 minute contest. Traush and Kinne each went three for five on the day and tallied four RBIs while Martino reached base three times with two walks and a hit.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Jake Silver was solid through five innings letting up four hits and two runs out of the 22 batters he faced earning the win. Mitchell Mullock and Matt Schwartz entered the game as relievers and pitched one inning each. Mullock and Schwartz closed out the game quick each only facing four batters.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Brewers exploited the Raptor’s pitcher Evan Richardson to score nine runs. Eight Brewers crossed home plate with Kinne scoring twice. Vassar found it’s spark as Jake Doyle was walked with the bases loaded, making way for Kinne’s first run.

Vassar’s momentum persisted into the fifth inning as the Brewers notched four more runs with Trauch doubling down the left field line gaining 2 RBIs and a run for Alex Hartnet and Martino before securing himself his third run of the game. The Brewers closed out the scoring as Bryan Rubin doubled to left field, opening the opportunity for Kinne to score. Richardson took the loss after pitching 3.1 innings with 98 pitches.

Vassar 3, Bard 4

Vassar was first to score in the second game of the day in the top of the third inning when Denis Shanagher reached base off a fielder’s choice, though the Brewers would fall to the Raptors in a just under three hours, 10-inning contest.

The Brewers would get back on the board in the fourth inning as Daniel Bonfiglio advanced to second off a wild pitch, sending Kinne to third and Trausch home. A few pitches later, Kinne would earn the final run for the Brewers after another Raptor wild pitch advancement.

Trailing 0-3, Bard answered in the bottom of the fifth with three runs to tie the game.

Joe Conti opened play on the mound for the Brewers and remained for 4.2 innings surrendering five hits and three runs on 20 batters. Three Brewers would step onto the mound before Billy Mathiesen would throw one pitch that Adam Carafotes would connect with for a game-winning home run in extra innings. With the loss, Mathiesen moves to 2-3 on the season.

Vassar concludes the day with a new record of 16-16 and 9-8 in conference.
