Mount Drops Two to Close Regular Season

NEW ROCHELLE – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team finished off the regular season on Sunday with a pair of non-conference losses on the road at the City College of New York. Freshman Braden Perry recorded three hits in a 10-7 game one loss and classmate Anthony Rizzo recorded a pair of safeties in an 8-2 game two defeat.

Game 1: CCNY 10 – Mount Saint Mary 7

Each team scored in its first four at-bats in Sunday’s opener, with the Mount grabbing leads of 1-0, 3-1, 5-4 and 6-5. Nicholas Terzulli opened the scoring in the first inning with a groundout and Jonathan Callanan and Alexander Nova pushed the Knights in front 3-1 in the second with run scoring groundouts.

After CCNY pushed in front 4-3 with three runs in the home half of the second the Knights regained the lead following a sacrifice fly from Kevin Colgan and a double from Perry that pushed Terzulli home.

The Beavers answered again in the third to knot the score at 5-5, before the Knights forged back in front with a run in the top of the fourth. Jesse Matuza singled home a run with two outs in the inning.

CCNY pulled in front in the bottom of the fourth with five runs to claim the lead for good in the contest. Anthony Cacchione delivered the big blow with a two-run double following a pair of one out walks in the inning.

Mount Saint Mary got a run closer in its final at-bat when Perry drove out his first career home run to center field with two outs in the seventh to get the Mount to within the final three run deficit.

Perry closed the game 3-for-4 with a pair of extra base hits to go along with two runs and two RBI. Matuza wrapped up the opener 2-for-3 with a run, RBI and four stolen bases, with Terzulli going 2-for-4 with a run and RBI. Nova doubled for the Knights and scored a run.

James McCleary made the start for the Knights and allowed four runs on three hits in 2.0 innings with Michael Tancredi coming on to work 2.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

Game 2: CCNY 8 – Mount Saint Mary 2

After CCNY scored a run to move in front 1-0 in the second inning of game two, the Knights rallied with their only two runs of the game in the fourth to pull in front 2-1. The Mount put the first two runners of the inning on and with two outs, Peter Knights singled to push home Tyler Swartz and Kevin Edgar.

The Beavers answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to move back in front and stretched their lead by two in the fifth and three in the sixth to complete the sweep. Jonathan Abreu struck with a two-run double in the fifth for CCNY.

Knights finished game two 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI with Rizzo going 2-for-3 for the Knights. Swartz recorded a hit and a run, with Knights and Christopher Introcaso swiping bases.

Alexander Mahar took the loss in game two after allowing three runs on five hits in 4.0 innings. He struck out four and walked two. Jeffrey Diaz worked a complete game for CCNY, surrendering two runs on seven hits.

Sunday’s sweep drops Mount Saint Mary to 12-26 overall on the season. The Knights return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Old Westbury to open play in the 2017 Skyline Conference Championship.
