Local Girl Scouts Give to Vassar Pediatric Patients

POUGHKEEPSIE – In their quest to earn the Bronze Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can receive, two students from Sheafe Road Elementary School in Wappingers Falls have donated 404 new children’s books to the Pediatrics Specialty Unit at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.

Emily Duro, 10, and Taylor McLeod, 10, hoped to collect a total of 50 new books for the award. However, between October and May they surpassed their goal by the hundreds.

“These wonderful books will bring so much joy and happiness to our pediatric patients,” said Jeanine Thompson, development manager for the Foundation for Vassar Brothers Medical Center. “These young ladies are an inspiration to give back to the community and help those in need, and we’re very proud of their accomplishment.”

To bring awareness to the community-based project, Duro and McLeod made announcements and created posters to be hung throughout their school to gather the attention of peers and faculty alike.

To earn the Bronze Award, Girl Scout Juniors must plan and complete a Take Action project, a “sustainable” venture that concentrates on education, raises awareness and leaves a lasting impact on the community after the girl’s participation ends.
