PLATTSBURGH – The State University of New York at New Paltz women’s tennis team fought against some inclement weather during the first weekend of conference matches, but managed to squeeze out a 5-0 victory over SUNY Cortland before the weather stopped play.

The duo of Jenna and Brittany Grandville got things going for the Hawks with an 8-0 victory at third doubles. Carol Tyson and Victoria Zezula followed suit with an 8-3 victory at first doubles while Emi Lewis and Courtney Koran sealed the sweep of the doubles for New Paltz.

With bad weather on the horizon it was a race to five points for the Hawks. Lindsay Haley won handily at sixth singles 6-0 6-0. Courtney Koran finished the day unbeaten for New Paltz winning at 5th singles 6-2 6-3 and secured the match for the Hawks. The win was a good start to making a return to the conference championships for the 15th consecutive year.

Head coach Rob Bruley said, “It was good to get back into winning ways after a disruptive day with weather issues.”

The Hawks were supposed to play Oneonta later that day, but was postponed due to the weather. New Paltz returns home to face Plattsburgh on Friday, Sept. 15 and RPI on Saturday.
