Overtime Ends in Draw For the Vassar Brewers

POUGHKEEPSIE – After a back and forth match on the pitch of Gordon Field accumulating 110 minutes of play, the Vassar College men’s soccer team tied the No. 5 State University of New York at Oneonta Red Dragons, Saturday afternoon.

In the five previous times the Brewers faced the Red Dragons, they lost twice and claimed three ties, falling to O-State 2-4 back on September 17, 2016.

The Brewers offense took a total of nine shots in the first half, lead by junior defender Tyler Gilmore to the Red Dragons seven. Vassar had additional scoring opportunities with six corner kicks placed inside the box off the foot of senior midfielder Hayden Van Brewer.

Sophomore goalkeeper Will Marment fended off two shots on net before the Red Dragons scored in the 10th minute off with a driven strike from O-State freshman Roberto Ventura.

Marment tallied another save, though Vassar could not connect and trailed 0-1 at the half.

O-State kicked off the second half, although Vassar came out intense offensively. A direct cross from the right side of the box from senior forward Jose Novas to the foot of junior midfielder Toby Stansell, opened the net for Stansell to take a touch and bury the ball to the lower left corner.

The game was tied.

The Brewers and Red Dragons would resume play, both teams taking any chance they could with shots just missing the net. In a last stitch effort to secure the win, the Brewers would look to Van Brewer for a lofted ball into the final third of the field, after a yellow card was issued to O-State’s Jorge Hernandez with 20 seconds left in the second overtime period. Though the ball was cleared away.

With the tie, Vassar moves to a record of 3-2-1.
