Red Foxes Shut Down Saint Peter’s to Go 3-2

POUGHKEEPSIE – The Marist volleyball team blanked an opponent for the seventh time this season when it took down Saint Peter’s, 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-13), on Oct. 29 in McCann Arena.

The Red Foxes went 3-2 on their five-match home stand and are 12-12 overall and 9-4 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. Saint Peter’s dropped to 0-26 including 0-14 in conference competition.

Marist led for the entire match and stormed out to a 5-0 lead to begin the afternoon. Marist’s advantage grew to as many as 12 points as junior Mackenzie O’Brien slammed four kills and added an assist in the opening set.

The Red Foxes broke loose on an 11-4 run to begin the second stanza. Junior Taylor van der Biezen and senior Kelsey Ediger had service aces on the scoring spree. Three consecutive kills off the hands of sophomore Nikki DeSerpa brought Marist to a 16-6 lead. Saint Peter’s closed the gap with an 8-3 run but the Red Foxes stayed sharp and went in front 2-0 in the contest.

A trio of Marist hitters helped it erupt for a 10-4 advantage to start the final frame. The Peacocks got to within three points at 11-8 but all the momentum belonged to the Red Foxes, who ripped off the match’s final five points.

“Coming into today we knew we wanted to play our style of volleyball on our side of the net and really just focus on being efficient, taking care of the ball, and being aggressive at the net,” Head Coach Lauren Amundson said. “Today we were able to do a lot of those things.”
