Offense Lifts Army Over American in Season Finale

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Army West Point women’s soccer team posted a season-high three goals in its win over American during the season finale Saturday afternoon.

The Black Knights closed out their season with a 4-11-2 mark overall and were 2-6-1 in Patriot League action, while the Eagles finished 2-15-0 on the year and 1-8-0 in league play.

Army was aggressive in the opening 10 minutes of the match, spending much of that time in the attacking third and earning four corner kicks and two shots.

The Eagles went on the offensive in the 14th minute as Alexandra Taylor dribbled to the middle of the field and fired a shot from the top of the box. Luckily for the Black Knights, Mia Padon came in to make the sliding block on the play.

Three minutes later, senior co-captain Clare Shea gave Army a 1-0 lead when a free kick from Samantha Sullenger was sent into the box. Shea flicked a backwards header to the far-right corner past a diving goalkeeper.

Headed into the break, American outshot Army 4-3 and 2-1 in shots on goal, while the Black Knights led in corner kicks, 7-2.

Sullenger increased Army’s lead in the 49th minute as she hammered home a ball that bounced out of the box from 25-yards out. Ten minutes later, rookie forward Erynn Johns chipped the goalkeeper from 20-yards out and put the ball just under the crossbar.
