NEWBURGH – Democratic Candidate for District 4 Legislator Kevindaryán Luján was joined by former candidate Omari Shakur for a Democratic unity announcement in front of Newburgh City Hall.
Kevindaryán Luján is a Hudson Valley community organizer and social justice advocate from the city of Newburgh running as the Democratic and Working Families candidate for Orange County Legislator for District 4. Throughout his campaign, Mr. Luján has emphasized the need for livable wage jobs and economic development in Newburgh, environmental awareness, and access to education.
“After our debate hosted by the NAACP and the Newburgh Free Library last Thursday, Omari and myself had a chance to talk, and we mutually decided that the best way forward for our city was to work together on its betterment,” said Luján. “I feel truly honored that such an important voice in our community will be joining our campaign. Omari and his team ran an excellent campaign and we are excited that we will now be able to work towards a common vision. This is a significant sign of unity and it shows the depth of Newburgh’s ability to lead. We will be working diligently to make sure that strong Democratic candidates are positioned to win across the board.”
Omari Shakur is a well-known activist and community leader who has been outspoken on the need for safe drinking water, racial justice, and an end to police violence in Newburgh. “Our emphasis is to win on November 7th,” said Omari, “and to make sure Newburgh’s interests are being represented. Unification is the vehicle to get us all to a brighter future.”
Shakur had been waging a write-in campaign for the seat in the Legislature, but has agreed to throw his support behind Luján after conversations between the two following a debate hosted by the NAACP. Orange County Executive candidate Pat Davis joined both men to discuss working together as a team moving forward.
“At a time when divisiveness defines our politics at all levels, we can’t get distracted from the real mission of government which is to help people and make our communities better and stronger” said County Executive candidate Pat Davis. “I’m proud of this agreement and excited that Mr. Shakur has made this selfless decision because he knows a win for Kevindaryán Luján will be a win for our community. I’m looking forward to work with them both in the future in the best interests of the City of Newburgh.”
