POUGHKEEPSIE – A day after being named Pioneer Football League Defensive Player of the Week, red-shirt junior linebacker Willie Barrett of the Marist football team earned Honorable Mention from STATS as Football Championship Subdivision National Defensive Player of the Week.
Barrett filled the stat sheet seven tackles, two-and-a-half tackles for loss, half-a-sack, two fumble recoveries, one fumble forced, and a pass break-up in Marist’s 38-31 win over Morehead State on Saturday. Both of Barrett’s fumble recoveries came at key junctures in the fourth quarter. With 6:05 remaining and the scored tied at 31, Barrett forced and then recovered a fumble at the Morehead State 42. The Red Foxes then scored the game-winning touchdown five plays later. On Morehead State’s final drive, Barrett recovered a fumble to seal the win.
This marks the fourth time this season a Red Fox has earned Honorable Mention from STATS, and the second time for Barrett.
Marist (4-6 overall, 3-4 Pioneer Football League) closes out the 2017 season on Saturday, Nov. 18 at San Diego (8-2, 7-0). Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. Eastern.
