Marist Red Foxes Women’s Basketball Falls to Northeastern

POUGHKEEPSIE – The Marist women’s basketball team suffered a tough 78-72 defeat to the hands of Northeastern of the Colonial Athletic Association on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Red Foxes are now 1-2 overall on the season, while Northeastern improves to 2-2.

Summary: The Red foxes got off to a slow start, falling behind 6-0, and 9-2 in the very beginning of the first quarter. Red-shirt freshman Molly Smith checked in and scored a quick four points, but Northeastern’s five three-pointers in the first quarter gave them a 21-9 lead heading into the second.

The Red Foxes started to turn things around when they went on a 10-0 run towards the middle of the second quarter, which included three layups from sophomore Rebekah Hand, to cut the deficit to five points. The teams then traded a few buckets, and after junior Lovisa Henningsdottir blocked a transition three attempt by Northeastern, sophomore Hannah Hand drained a three at the buzzer off a feed from Allie Best giving the Red Foxes a one-point lead.

That was the Red Foxes’ first lead of the game.

Both teams traded buckets in the third quarter, but Shannon Todd helped Northeastern retake the lead scoring eight points of her own. Northeastern held a 53-48 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

A pair of threes by Northeastern’s Claudia Ortiz and Jess Genco extended their lead to nine points early on in the fourth quarter. Allie Best answered with five straight points, and Rebekah Hand added a layup, and Marist got within two. Gabby Giacone scored the next seven Husky points, and Northeastern looked to be in control late in the fourth after a Genco three gave the Huskies an 11-point lead with 1:54 remaining in the fourth. A late rally by the Red Foxes came up short, and Northeastern hung on for a 78-72 win.
