NEWBURGH – San Miguel Academy of Newburgh (SMAN) has been awarded a $15,000 grant from KeyBank Foundation, which will finance a student’s education for an upcoming school year.
SMAN offers a tuition-free, middle school alternative for boys from underserved families in the City of Newburgh. The organization aims to “break through the cycle of poverty through education,” specifically through programs that encourage literacy and experiential growth.
“We are grateful to receive this donation from KeyBank Foundation,” said Fr. Mark Connell, SMAN Executive Director. “For the last twelve years, our programs would not have been successful without our supporters and donors. This grant will allow one of our students to begin or continue their education here at San Miguel Academy, which will put them on a path for future success.”
SMAN has welcomed over 180 students since opening in 2006, offering subject-based learning, extended day, Saturday and summer programs. SMAN also offers high school placement, graduate success initiatives, and child and family support services. All SMAN students have entered ninth grade on time, 96 percent of alumni have finished secondary programs on time, and all of those students have entered a post-secondary program including college and career training programs.
“At Key, we champion mentoring and youth academic programs in our local communities,” said Joe Markey, KeyBank Hudson Valley and Metro New York Market President. “We are proud to present this grant to San Miguel Academy as they continue to provide academic and personal support to Newburgh students and their families.”
