Newburgh Girl Power Receives Local Support

NEWBURGH – At the most recent meeting, the Greater Newburgh Rotary Club awarded Newburgh Girl Power (NGP) $500 to support ongoing and future programs. Representing NGP were Doris Perez Lopez, Transition Specialist at NFA, and Program Director for NGP; Samantha Galan (coordinates for 9-12 age group, student at SUNY Orange); and Natalie Robles (in 7th grade at Cornwall, Ambassador for 9-12 year olds).

Newburgh Girl Power is an after school program, stressing service to the greater Newburgh community. The girls meet weekly at St. George’s Episcopal Church. Two age groups include 9-12 and 13-18. Doris started with 12 girls four years ago, and currently has 33 girls.

Some service projects this year include the 4th annual MLK day in January, and this full day of activities have girls prepare “Backpack Blessings”, preparing appreciation bags gifted back into Newburgh; annual community cleanup, and a number of other community activities. At weekly meetings a number of other topics are discussed, as an example preparing for college or other careers, and other life skill workshops. In recognition of Rotary’s support, NGP presented a certificate of appreciation to the club!
