Track and Field Teams Close Indoor Season

SOUTH HUNTINGTON – The Mount Saint Mary College Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field teams finished off the Indoor season on Sunday with a strong showing at the St. Joseph’s-L.I. Invitational. Peter Zecchin posted an 11th place finish in the Men’s Weight Throw, while freshman Alexandra Salamone posted a top-10 finish in the Women’s Shot Put.

Zecchin was 11th overall in the Men’s weight throw at 13.6 meters, and also took 16th overall for the Knights out of 43 competitors in men’s shot put at 11.5 meters. Sophomore Ryan Pagano was the men’s top finisher in the mil, showing a time of 5:07, while Janrell Baniel was men’s finisher for the Mount in the 3,000-meters at 10:27.97. Isaiah Bevans-Didymus turned in a strong run in the 400-meter dash at 54.84, good for 13th place overall on Sunday.

For the women, Samantha Papadopolous was the Mount’s top runner in the mile at 6:10, good enough for 16th overall out of 36 runners. Alexandra Bergen also ran a nice time of 6:39.6 in the same event, while Taylor O’Brien was the fastest Mount athlete of the day in the 200-meter dash at 31.17 and added a time of 9.29 seconds in the 60-meter dash.

Salamone broke into the top 10 in the women’s Shot put at 9.81 meters to place 7th overall and had a nice toss of 8.33 meters in the women’s weight throw. Valerie Lupi just edged her out in the same event at 8.56 meters.

Following a strong Indoor Season, the Knights will begin competition in the Outdoor campaign on March 24 at the Wesleyan Outdoor Meet.
