Ellenville Students Have Scholarship Opportunity

ELLENVILLE – The Ellenville Central School District is pleased to announce it has partnered with SUNY Ulster and the SUNY Ulster Foundation to offer the President’s Challenge Scholarship to current Grade 8, first generation, college-bound students. The scholarship will provide students a full two-year, tuition-free college education at SUNY Ulster upon graduating from High School.

Selected students will also receive guidance counseling and mentoring throughout High School. So long as they continue to do well and graduate, they will have their first two years of college at SUNY Ulster paid for through donations from community sponsors.

To be considered eligible for the scholarship, students must have an 80 percent cumulative grade point average and a 75 percent cumulative grade point average in English, math, science, and social studies through the third marking period. In addition, they must have an 85 percent or higher attendance rate and minimal disciplinary infractions. Preference is also given to students with an economic need.

Interested Grade 8 students must submit an application and essay, and may be required to sit for an interview. If selected, the students will have the opportunity to meet and build relationships with their sponsors, as well as attend events at both the High School and on the SUNY Ulster campus.

Ellenville Superintendent of Schools Lisa Wiles says the scholarship program is a wonderful opportunity for economically challenged students who are dreaming of going to college. “We are grateful to SUNY Ulster and the SUNY Ulster Foundation,as well as to our community sponsors for making this possible,” she said.

An informational meeting about the President’s Challenge Scholarship will take place in the Ellenville High School Media Center on Wednesday, March 21, beginning at 6 PM.For more information, call (845) 647-0100.
